WCMUC was formed in 1987 as a self-help group for organizations performing the Microtox® test in Western Canada.

Over the years it has performed many Round Robin studies with a wide variety of samples including:

• Oil sands plant by-products
• Gas plant sludge
• Pulp mill effluent
• Pure chemicals
• Kimberlite samples
• Drilling waste extracts
• Municipal sludge extracts
• Contaminated soils

WCMUC has also directed several Research and Development projects including:

• Microtox® Reconstituted Reagent Stability
• Guidelines for Microtox® Proficiency Testing
• Standardized Testing Procedure
